Old Wood Boat up in the Reeds Oil Painting by Joseph Burrough

Old Wooden Boat up in the Reeds

Oil on Linen Canvas              24 x 36 Inches                    SOLD

I found this old wooden boat run aground in the marsh reeds of Hoskins Creek in Tappahannock, Virginia, about a mile from where I grew up. I suspect Hurricane Sandy landed the last blow on this old craft, as it was half full of water last March. It's a classic, antique, wooden fishing workboat characteristic of many that plied the tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay, as it did here just off the Rappahannock River. I especially enjoyed capturing the many years of thick peeling paint on the sides of this old vessel. What a story those old paint layers could tell! Sadly, I've noticed it's gone now.
